Recreational Therapist

Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities

We are currently looking to hire a:

Recreation Therapist

.6 FTE (20hrs/wk)

1 Year Contract

The Adult Day Centre (ADC) supports clients with cognitive impairments as well as those with physical or intellectual disabilities. In a team-oriented environment, clients have the opportunity to participate in supervised group and/or individual activities, helping them to maintain their functional abilities and motor skills, supporting their independence, offering socialization, and providing relief and support to caregivers.

Reporting To: Client Services Manager


The Recreation Therapist will work within a flexible and supportive team to assist in the daily operation of the ADC as well as plan and deliver social, recreational and therapeutic programs. She/he will take a client-centered approached to their work and provide leadership to other staff, students, and volunteers in order to effectively deliver the necessary programming.


  • Plan and implement new and innovative recreational, social and cognitive interventions for older adults with dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke and neurological issues.
  • Develop monthly calendars.
  • Conduct client routine assessments and develop care plans based on assessment results.
  • Monitor and assess clients’ physical, cognitive and emotional well-being and progress.
  • Ensure client records are updated in database system (CIMS).
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Identify and link individuals to internal and external resources, as necessary


  • A degree or diploma from an accredited institution with a specialization in Recreation Therapy. Eligible for registration or a member in good standing of Therapeutic Recreation Ontario.
  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) candidate preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in older adult’s program planning, implementation and evaluation.
  • Experience working with older adults with cognitive impairments is required
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate quality client-centred care programs for individuals and various client populations
  • Ability to adapt programs to meet individual needs
  • Experience in a community or health care setting work environment.
  • Strong leadership abilities and experience supervising volunteers/student.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Strong computer and documentation skills (Microsoft Office, CIMs).
  • Standard CPR and First Aid.
  • Immunizations for tuberculosis, varicella (chickenpox), mumps and hepatitis B.
  • A Current Vulnerable Sector Police check completed within last 12 months.
  • Fluency in language(s) other than English is an asset.
