– Gulf Shores Small Animal Emergency Veterinarian Clinical Lecturer; Assistant/Associate/Full Clinical Professor The Department of Clinical Sciences in the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants to fill two full-time, non-tenured, 12-month appointments as Small Animal Emergency Veterinarians at Auburn Veterinary Specialists in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

This new referral center will provide internal medicine and surgical care for small animals, and will later expand to include emergency services.

The referral center will participate in the educational mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine, providing focused clinical instruction to senior veterinary students, interns and residents and continuing education programs for veterinarians.

Primary care will not be offered at the referral center.

Responsibilities : The successful candidate will have demonstrated an interest in emergency medicine and surgery and in advanced patient care.

Initially, clinical responsibilities will include after-hours care and management of hospitalized animals.

Responsibilities will expand to include the management of emergency cases once the service is opened.

Members of the veterinary faculty must contribute to a team environment, engage productively with referring veterinarians, and collaborate with colleagues on the main Auburn University campus.

The faculty member will provide exceptional patient care while simultaneously providing clinical instruction for veterinary students.

An after-hours rotating working schedule of Monday night through Thursday night and Friday night through the weekend and including Sunday night is anticipated.

Requirements/ Qualifications : Qualified applicants must hold a DVM or equivalent degree and have completed a minimum of two years of general veterinary practice or a formal rotating small animal internship at the time employment begins.

An interest in emergency and critical care, and small animal surgery is desired.

The successful candidate should have excellent communication skills and a demonstrated commitment to team-based, high quality, compassionate medicine.

Title and starting salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials.

About the Veterinary Referral Center at Gulf Shores: The Auburn University Veterinary Referral Center is part of a new 26-acre Auburn University Educational Complex being built through a cooperative agreement between Auburn University and the City of Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The complex, completed in 2018, is located in Baldwin County, the fastest growing county in Alabama, which hosts 5.7 million visitors annually and is the center of a referral base of 675,000 residents along the Gulf Coast.

The 18,000 square foot referral center will serve as an extension of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital located in Auburn to provide specialty veterinary services and related educational opportunities in clinical veterinary education.

Auburn University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital has long served as a referral center for veterinarians practicing in South Alabama and West Florida.

The referral center will include six exam rooms, two operating rooms (with separate rooms for anesthesia induction, surgical preparation, and recovery), intensive care and critical care areas, central treatment room, endoscopy room, laboratory, pharmaceutical dispensing area, advanced imaging capabilities (radiography, ultrasound, MRI, and CT), infectious disease isolation area, nutrition center, and canine and feline wards.

The facility will be permanently staffed with Auburn University veterinarians, technicians, and office personnel.

Faculty from Auburn’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital may provide specialty services through temporary on-site assignments and electronic consultation.

Intensive veterinary continuing education will be provided at the Gulf Shores facility by Auburn faculty.

Located on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the city of Gulf Shores has an excellent public school system, strong medical health facilities and access to some of the world’s most beautiful white sand beaches.

The nearby Gulf State Park has beaches, trails, a pier, plus a golf course and the Gulf State Park Lodge.

To the west, sea turtles and migratory birds thrive among the coastal habitats of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge.

Farther west, 19th-century Fort Morgan overlooks Mobile Bay.

The State’s Dauphin Island Sea Lab is located across Mobile Bay and is a hub for marine science education, marine research and coastal zone management.
