Research Assistant II – Translational Molecular Pathology

SUMMARY The primary purpose of the Research Assistant II position is to carry out laboratory research projects in the laboratory of the Institutional Tissue Bank (ITB) understanding the functions of IHC, collection of blood samples for germline analysis and possible timeline/follow-up studies.

Technical experience working with cell lines is desirable.

The RAII must be able to provide technical and coordination skills in carrying out various research projects, coordinates procedures, and performs technical laboratory duties in accordance with general and/or specific plans.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES Biorepository Research and Clinical Collection Collection and processing of blood samples for germline analysis and various follow-up studies.

Processing includes DNA germline extraction and analysis from new patients enrolled in the FDC protocol, and includes but is not limited to: serum, plasma, DNA extraction and PBMC isolation.

Collects fresh blood from new MD Anderson patients that will allow prospective collection of plasma that can yield proteins and cell-free DNA for analysis, as well as collection and extraction of germline DNA.

Use MDACC clinical and research database, inventory samples from Operating Room and Interventional Radiology procedures, transfer samples to appropriate storage location.

Develop biobanking-based novel techniques using specimens and core needle biopsies of blood samples for biomarkers analysis.

Perform research, update, and upgrade novel techniques for FDC protocol for complex research projects involving biobanking.

Data Gathering and Analysis Records and evaluates data in accordance with methods requested.

Scanning of IHC slides for digital pathology analysis.

Operate the Aperio scanner system to digitally scan IHC slides for pathology analysis, and to troubleshoot small technical problems.

Laboratory Management and Maintenance Maintains Lab Functions to include ordering of supplies and ensures lab equipment is maintained in good operating order.

Establishes a system for tracking, processing, and monitoring the research program operations and protocols that are utilizing the services of the biorepository.

Clinical and Laboratory Compliance Participates and contributes to the institutional and external compliance efforts necessary for the FDC and biobanking protocols, and laboratory processes.

Other duties as assigned Bachelor’s degree with major course works in one of the basic sciences.

Two years experience in scientific or experimental research work.

No experience required with preferred degree.
