We are looking for talented Critical Care Registered Nurses to join our nursing team here at University of Maryland Medical Center.

Job Summary
Established in 1965, the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine at Shock Trauma is internationally recognized for its leadership and expertise in the clinical application of hyperbaric therapy.

With the only multiple hyperbaric chamber in the State of Maryland, the Center can accommodate up to 23 patients and care providers per dive.

Conditions that are responsive to hyperbaric oxygen therapy include:

  • Gas/air embolism and decompression illness
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation
  • Clostridial and nonclostridial gas gangrene, including necrotizing infections
  • Crush injury and acute traumatic ischemia
  • Compromised skin grafts and flaps
  • Acute blood loss anemia (particularly in Jehovah’s Witnesses)
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Radiation tissue damage
  • Enhancement of healing in selected wound problems, such as nonhealing ulcers in patients with diabetes or peripheral vascular disease

Within this Center, recreational and commercial scuba divers can also undergo dive physicals to ensure they are healthy enough to dive.

Specialists at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center are available for consultation and patient referral 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Ambulatory patients are evaluated in Shock Trauma’s Outpatient Clinic on a scheduled basis.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Qualifications include:

  • Current ICU experience required
  • Prior experience in diving or hyperbaric operations preferred
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, with a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to compact state requirements outlined by the Maryland Board of Nursing

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to apply appropriate guidelines and quality assurance standards established by NFPA, ASME, PVHO, OSHA and other agencies.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply all safety precautions and emergency operational procedures necessary to the operation of a hyperbaric complex.
  • Ability to determine quality of patient performance while in chamber, patients degree of discomfort, failing medical status, or patients inability to complete treatment
  • Selected candidates must provide a diving medical history if requested, and will be given a diving examination to determine their physical ability to perform the job.
