The Director is responsible for coordinating the clinical risk management activities of Rush University Medical Center to ensure a seamless approach to mitigating all potential exposures and risks.

This includes overseeing the identification of areas of clinical risk and loss prevention risks.

The Director reports to the Deputy General Counsel and Chief Risk Officer.

All Clinical Risk Managers report to the Director of Clinical Risk Management.

The Director works closely with other members of Rush Legal, Patient Safety, Hospital Operations Administrators, Security, and all clinical areas.

Position Responsibilities: Overall administration of clinical risk management activities for RUMC, including oversight of clinical risk managers.

Further develops and implements a system for identifying, assessing, and reporting potential risks, with early and proactive intervention in an effort to mitigate risk.

Partners with Claims Management in identifying potential claim to allow for early investigation and potential resolution.

Participates in the development and advancement of risk management programs, including developing tools and/or methods to track and monitor risk across the organization.

Assists with developing and maintaining risk policies and procedures across the organization.

Co-facilitate the review, analysis, coding, investigation, and distribution of safety events with risk managers and patient safety.

Develops and oversees call schedule for all risk managers.

Assists with the implementation of a risk management information system.

Assists in the development and implementation of incident and crisis management plans.

Facilitates interface of risk managers with various quality improvement committees throughout the organization.

Works closely with the Department of Performance Improvement and Clinical Effectiveness on patient safety initiatives.

Investigates, attends, and participates in root cause analysis meetings.

Implements a clinical risk dashboard to provide real time information on clinical risk.

Prepares reports for various committees on risk management trends.

Proactively educates medical staff, nursing, ancillary departments, house staff, and administration on risk issues while recognizing industry liability trends.

Develops educational programs for high risk departments in an effort to mitigate overall risk for individuals and the institution.

Assists in the development, implementation, and management of an adverse event disclosure program.

Position Qualifications Include: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.

Master’s degree in Nursing or an equivalent advanced degree is required.

10 or more years of risk management experience in the healthcare industry is strongly desired.

Familiarity with a RMIS system is strongly desired.

Proficient in designing and producing high quality reports and presentations.

Ability and desire to function both collaboratively and independently.

Leadership acumen and experience strongly desired.

Excellent communication skills.

Committed to accountability, process improvement, and process and excellence.

Strong ability to coach, develop, and mentor junior staff toward promotional opportunities.
